Landscape artists hunt for the spectacular light in Quebec valley carved by a giant meteor.

BAIE ST. PAUL, Que. –Some folks will tell you, sometimes with a twinkle in their eye and sometimes with a straight face, that it's the meteor that thundered into the river and mountains northeast of Quebec City millions of years ago that gives this area its distinctive feel... Continued --->

TRAVEL EDITOR

I find my inspiration
in every day poetry,
The adventure of meeting people,
the peaceful life in the country,
my visits to urban metropolis,
trips and discovery of new things.
The art shop,
my laboratory of thoughts
where ideas take form,
where works of art bloom,
in diversity,
in harmony
or in contradictions.
Art is like life,
Full of mysteries,
questions without answers.
What’s important is to play,
No matter if our creative movement
is being born in the mind of the adult
or in the spontaneity of the child.
Creating is like taking a boat and sailing.
Our cape is perfection,
knowing that it is an unreachable island.
Our poets souls
sometimes build illusions for us,
as shadows in the horizon
of the promise land,
to give us hope
to maintain our dreams alive
to paint the impossible.

- Humberto Pinochet

A handsome man of 53, his smile is broad and genuine; his handshake strong as is his presence. He exudes “joie de vive” romanticism; not only in his art but also in his life.

Born in Santiago Chile, Pinochet’s mother, Sylvia Araya a painter in her own right, invariably guaranteed his childhood would be steeped in arts and culture.

As a child he excels throughout grade school and throughout high school winning artistic awards, merits and diplomas. His progression took him to the Fine Arts program at Valparaiso Catholic University. It was here Pinochet changed direction and seriously studied architecture and later, graphic design. However, he never abandoned his love of painting and more so, his penchant for drawing.

At twenty, he leaves his beloved Chile to follow his wanderlust to Canada.

Choosing to make Quebec his home, he enthusiastically enrolls in the Visual Art program at Quebec’s Laval University where his talent takes yet another turn to that of photography. Again, as in various media he peruses; he excels in his field and soon has an impressive collection of work for his first professional exhibition “New York – 86 Hours” which is met with great acclaim and takes “his show on the road” exhibiting in some of the most prestigious galleries and museums throughout Europe, South America and the U.S. At twenty two Humberto Pinochet was experiencing what most artists take a life-time to achieve.

In 2006 he was bestowed as Academician by the Academie Internationale des Beaux Arts de Quebec, in 2007, Academy Advisor. In 2007 and 2008 he was privileged to be invited to participate in the prestigious Salon de la Societe National des Beaux-Arts at the Louvre in Paris.

He has always followed his instincts, his love of the world and his heart. In his words “ I paint my life”.
